Exploring the Intersection of Faith, Science, and Culture: UJ Professor Dr. JD Lyonhart Releases Book

Jamestown, ND (06/17/2025) — When you take a trip to Dr. JD Lyonhart's website (https://www.jdlyonhart.com/) you are greeted by a bright and inviting yellow background, behind a Ferris wheel of rotating cultural icons, including a cross, a question mark, an atom, and the McDonalds logo, amongst others. This sets the stage for seeing into the mind of the Associate Professor of Christianity and Philosophy at the University of Jamestown. He is not only passionate about teaching but deeply committed to addressing the pressing spiritual questions of our time, and doing so in conversation with science, philosophy, and pop culture.

While his academic background (PhD, Cambridge University) and research output might suggest a stuffy academic, his past vocation as a preacher, along with his constant stream of dad jokes and movie references, soon dispel that notion. The first time I met Dr. Lyonhart, we did an interview to discuss the Philosophy of Religion class he teaches at UJ. Given the context of the challenges we face in society-ranging from political strife to existential dilemmas-his insights felt particularly relevant. Dr. Lyonhart is not just an ivory tower academic; he is a pastoral guide for the University's students navigating the complexities of faith and doubt in today's world.

On June 24th, he is set to release his latest book, The Journey of God: Christianity in Six Movements. This work is a culmination of his experiences in the classroom, shaped by the real questions and discussions he has had with his students, and written to meet people where they are.

"I often receive inquiries about where religion fits into the curriculum at the University of Jamestown," he explains. "We believe that faith provides essential context for addressing everyday problems, regardless of individual beliefs. "The Journey of God is designed to be more than just an academic text; it is an accessible guide for Christians and seekers alike.

"This book is a journey meant to inspire and engage readers at all stages of their faith," Dr. Lyonhart shares. "My hope is that it will help them understand God's presence in their lives."

He acknowledges that the book was significantly influenced by his interactions with students. "There are definitely student conversations that help develop this book," he notes. "It's intended for those who might not identify as religious but are in a university setting, grappling with important questions about themselves and the world."

For Dr. Lyonhart, this book serves as a guide for first-year students and others eager to explore their faith seriously. "It's also written to be engaging and easy to read," he adds.

In the classroom Dr. Lyonhart is known for his approachable teaching style and his dedication to fostering an environment where students feel comfortable exploring their beliefs. "Education is not just about sharing knowledge; it's about encouraging students to think critically about their beliefs and assumptions," he emphasizes.

Beyond his role as a professor, Dr. Lyonhart is also a co-host of The Spiritually Incorrect Podcast, where he engages in candid discussions about faith and philosophy. "The podcast is a platform for open dialogue, where we can confront difficult questions and explore our spiritual journeys together," he explains.

Dr. Lyonhart is making complex ideas accessible and it is evident in every aspect of his work, whether in the classroom, through his writing, or in his podcast. This book is one to add to the summer reading list.

This faculty spotlight is the first in a series of twelve that will be featured on the uj.edu website and social media in the upcoming year. Check back with us monthly to learn more about the contribution of liberal arts education to our students and see how their work is impacting society.
